What’s Special with Natural Breast Augmentation

Fat transfer to the breast is the ultimate way to obtain a subtle but noticeable result using your own body’s tissue. Since there’s no implant, none of the complications involving implants are associated with this procedure. Complications involved with implants include capsular contracture, implant infection, and implant malposition. Fat grafting or transfer allows for very specific injection techniques. These techniques shape the breast in ways that are not always obtainable with implants, and still appear natural.

What to Expect Natural Breast Augmentation

A modest, yet noticeable enlargement or augmentation is expected. Initially, the breasts are swollen and filled with all of the newly transferred fat. Anywhere from 50-65% of the transferred fat will survive, and so over the next 2-3 months after surgery, you can expect your breast size to shrink from its initial postoperative look. However, this is usually not a bad thing, and in fact most women desiring fat transfer absolutely love their results. You can also expect to have minimal, if any, scarring. The fat is injected via very small access sites made with a needle that heal up. They are so small they typically don’t even need a suture! So, you get a very natural, beautiful, fuller look, with minimal scarring – plus the benefit of liposuction to your trouble areas.

Surgical Planning

This technique can be used on nearly anyone who desires it to increase their breast size. Dr. Linville will see you in his office and determine what will work best for you as well as the areas you would like to have liposuction. From this point, the surgery is relatively straightforward, and liposuction, as well as fat grafting, in the right hands is extremely safe with minimal risk and minimal down time.

Other Natural Breast Augmentation Techniques

It is possible to do fat grafting along with breast augmentation with implants if so desired.  It is also possible that if your breasts are starting to drop or sag, that you will need a breast lift as a first stage procedure.  It is not advisable to perform fat grafting at the same time as the lifting procedure, as the fat can disrupt the blood supply if there has been a lot of dissection.  Therefore, it’s best to do the lift first, and then fat can be used to augment and improve shape, including enhancing the upper pole, a common concern for many women.

Recovery

The typical recovery from this is one week, primarily to allow some of the swelling and bruising to subside, and for the soreness from the liposuction areas to dissipate. Dr. Linville’s staff will make sure you have the proper postoperative garments you need, and he will see you immediately after your surgery and several more times to make sure you are recovering properly. As soon as he approves that you are ready, you may return to full activity. Since there are no implants to disrupt, there are not a whole lot of concerns.

Is Fat Transfer Safe?

Fat transfer to the breast has been proven to be safe, and is used routinely for women who have had their breasts removed due to breast cancer, with no evidence to show a link to new breast cancer development. Liposuction, especially by a double-board certified plastic surgeon, is very safe, because you can be confident that all proper safety measures will be taken, and you will have an excellent result to your liposuction.

Breast screening exams such as mammograms can be altered by fat that has been transferred, and will typically show up as benign findings on mammography, such as oil cysts or benign-appearing calcification. Provided your breast radiologist is familiar with these benign findings, it should not lead to more biopsies or studies.

Additional Stages

Some patients who desire a much larger breast shape but want to do fat-only will require more than one round of fat transfer. This is because, as mentioned, only some of the fat survives, yet only so much fat can be injected at each surgery. Once the breasts have healed to their new volume, if more size is desired, another round, and sometimes even a third round, can be performed.

Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation Results

You can expect a modest but noticeable enhancement. After surgery, the breasts will be swollen and enlarged with the new fat. Doctors expect 50%-65% of the fat to survive after the first 2-3 months. They plan accordingly, over injecting so you are left with an attractive result. The procedure creates minimal scarring due to the small, precise injection sites used. Typically, the injection sites don’t even need a suture
